Is the Writing Process Cathartic?

Well, I must admit to coming a bit unstuck by the word ‘process’ as there really isn’t much of one.  My writing tends to come to me pretty much complete and I refrain from editing once they ‘fall onto the page’.  I never set out with the intention to write, but then something will catch my attention, trigger an emotion or spike an idea and the race is on to find something to scribble the words on – no surface is safe!

I may go weeks without writing anything and then find three or four poems coming in quick succession.  It really is entirely erratic and unplanned – which is reflective of my whole personality!  I have been known to pull into lay-bys to write or lurch out of bed at silent hours to put pen to paper lest by morning the words have drifted away with my dreams.

I think the words take on a life of their own; but yes, when a poem is created there is definitely a sense of peace that an idea or feeling has etched its way onto the page.
