Ok, so the Euros
It’s quite a big deal
I get it, it’s football
And loads of guys feel,
A huge sense of connection
Patriotism and pride
Escapism from work
And stress from outside.
It’s beer and flags
A rare chance to be
Caught up in the moment
Kick back and feel free.
A surge of emotion
Whipping right round the earth
As the best of the best
Kick up Wembley’s turf.
It’s timeless and ageless
And emotions let go
A riproar rollercoaster
Insane highs: a few lows.
It’s raucous and magic
And event not to miss
When they lift up the cup
Every boy craves to kiss.
And for one night in twelve hundred
One day in fifty years
It’s wonder and promise
Will unleash the tears.
It’s football, I get it
It’s a healer of sorts-
The ball and the whistle
The shirts and the shorts.
We hoped it would come home-
For cheers to clash in the sky
But emotions flooded like beer
Dads and sons cried.
It was too much to hope for
for one night this year
For healing celebration
Instead of anger and fear.
So we’ll wait a bit longer
Til we heal back as one
In joy and in laughter
and pride and in fun.
